Grand Junction is a beautiful place to ride a scooter. Locals know this; so every fall they organize three days of rides and events in hopes of attracting new scooterists to our town. What makes this rally special is the clubs that return year after year, which is why we call it a Gathering. Local clubs, The Blue Ribbon Kings and High Desert Scooterists are joined by members of the Duke City Scooter Club (Albuquerque, NM), Brigham Bee’s (SLC, UT), Rival Gang, DMBK, Bottle Rockets and Mod’s and Knockers (Denver, CO).
We kicked things off Friday night with the Blue Ribbon Kings BBQ. Which featured beer from Albuquerque, New Mexico’s Scooter Brewing Company and food from Junctions own Finger Sucking Good BBQ. Entertainment included DJ Toby Danger who mixed up the sounds of The Who, followed by a backyard screening of Quadrophenia.
Saturday we met up at the Grand Vista, our host hotel for the weekend. From there 43 scooters headed out on a countryside ride to the Colorado National Monument. The ride across the Monument’s Rim Rock Drive is a 23-mile awesome mix of twisty roads and deep scenic canyons. We ended the ride back in town at the Kannah Creek Brewery, for some tasty eats and great craft beer.
Saturday evening our local shop Motorcycle Accessories played host to Gymkhana. We had a few new locals join us for the first time at this event. One of which dominated the course on his tricked out Ruckus. Events included the slow race, limbo, and drag race. The Gathering’s Gymkhana is always a good time.
Saturday night, riders gathered at Naggy McGee’s Irish Pub for the raffle and live music. Junction’s own Shotgun Hodown opened the night with their blend of psychedelic country punk. During the set change John Tonic (BRKSC) raffled off some of our great sponsor gifts. Including gift cards, music, accessories and gear from: Caribou Cases, The Leechpit, Scooter Brewing Company, Kannah Creek, Alliance Powersports, Grand Junction Starbucks, Hoodaroos, Seeds Of Revolution, Scooter Brewing Company, Jump Up Records, Canyon Wind Cellars, No Coast Sushi, Main Street Bagels, Enzo’s Pizzeria, Planet 9 Smoke shop, Friction Skateboards, and Corazzo. Our headliner Folk Hogan, from Salt Lake City, followed up the raffle. This band of Gypsies kept the bar rocking with their high energy punk inspired folk rock till just before close. At which time the BRKSC raffled of a 1986 custom Honda Gyro.
Sunday morning we met up at the Grand Vista hotel and rode into downtown Grand Junction for a late breakfast at Main Street Bagels. We planned enough time for guests to enjoy our historic town, complete with shops and street art. We regrouped at 1:00 for a ride into Western Colorado’s world famous wine country Palisade, Colorado — with a stop at Canyon Wind Cellars. The ride circled its way back to Grand Junction and ended at Cruisers Bar. In 2011 the Blue Ribbon Kings started a tradition when they bestowed the Rally flag to Richard Cordova of the Duke City Scooter Club. This flag represents the family hood that is the High Desert Gathering. The recipient is asked to take the flag and return with their club patch attached for the next year. Richard honored the flag and passed it on to its new caretaker Kyle Breco of the Rival Gang. The Kings handed out a few awards from the weekend and the clubs said farewell till next year…
Thanks again to Corazzo for your support of our scooter event; we love your products! Your donations were greatly appreciated. Your product is exceptional and the winners will wear your name with pride for many years to come!
